What will my child be able to do after he/she completes this year?
Level One students should achieve Novice Mid proficiency and motivated students even visit the Novice High range. These students will employ memorized phrases to ask and answer questions on familiar topics. They speak in phrases and short sentences. They will understand words, phrases and questions about themselves and the surroundings when people speak slowly and clearly.
Students will master Novice Mid and High and some with begin to visit Intermediate Low during Level Two German. However, they will simply visit Intermediate Low in level two German. Reaching for 'recombination' is encouraged! These kids will begin to grasp the main point and some specific, practiced details in written and oral passages on familiar topics, when the speaker is willing to repeat and slow down, or when they can replay or reread the content. These students can use a series of simple and compound sentences with some details on familiar topics presented at length in class.
Level Three German students will reside in Intermediate Low if they are consistently keeping up with their work and applying themselves. Some will reach for Intermediate Mid proficiency goals. These students can create personal meaning in predictable situations. In reading and oral passages, these students can grasp meaning, gathering main idea AND supporting details, when the content and vocabulary is familiar. They are able to ask for clarification and negotiate meaning without memorized phrases.
The students who take Level FOUR and FIVE German will finish the year 'residing' in Intermediate Mid or High, participating actively in discussions on familiar topics and speaking more autonomously. They will even begin to handle a few complicated and/or academic situations on familiar topics sharing and supporting their views. These students develop the ability to grasp the main ideas from oral and written passages in which much of the content and vocabulary is even unknown .
